Living room makeover - painting update

At long last, our canvas is at peace. After my previous attempt, I knew exactly how I wanted to paint it, and finally finished it late last night.

I've really enjoyed uncomplicated artwork as of late, so I thought why not magic some up for myself. I wanted it to pop, for it to remain monochromatic, and something artsy fartsy yet simple going on in the middle. I also chose to hang it up compared to it previously sitting on our shelf, which I think has made a huge difference.

At the moment I'm conscious of it looking a bit pretentious. But I'm really, really happy with it this time around, so that's trumping my hesitations.

And below, the 'work' I had done on it previously. I felt a whole mess of guilt painting over it at first thanks to your incredibly sweet and thoughtful comments, but for me, it's previous state made me want to barf a little I felt wasn't to its full potential.

I finished painting late last night, and when husband saw it this morning all I heard was "Woah. That looks a lot better" from down the hallway. Happy face.

I hope you guys had a relaxing and / or refreshing weekend! It'll be Mothers Day on Sunday here in Ireland so I'm determined for no last minute malarky this year. I have a couple tricks up my sleeve ...

xx A

  2. Wow, that looks amazing!!! I have tried the black & white abstract myself and sadly failed many times - I seem to make it worse each time I try and fix it! Looks great!

    1. Ah Sarah, if you only knew how many times I've painted over that sucker! Easily ... 7 times. Thank god I'm finally happy with it.

  3. okay that makes a statement!! I do like it hung and it seems to command the space well. I do like it. I had a wee giggle about the pretentious comment. Pfft who cares? I will say the gold thing I still can;t get my head around, in your post below. I would think it is because I suffer from silver bias lol

Hey can I friend you on facebook? lol you can say no and I wont be offended lol

    1. Hahaha, thanks for feeding my ego. The more I get used to it at home, the less pretentious it seems. Husband keeps commenting on how much he likes it, and he's not an arty person. Winning.

Don't worry - I was all about silver up until recently. I still only wear it!

  4. Also... a question.
Your photography of the mantle over last time is improved.
    What is your secret?
I can always use a good photography tip.

    1. Thanks Pat! It's a process of elimination these days. I've found our apartment tricky to photograph, to say the least.

      - I took the pic with no natural light (early morning, lights on, it helps to be in a rush to work)
      - Set my camera to tungsten setting
      - I then corrected the colour using Microsoft Office Picture Manager at work (I wish I had Photoshop in work!) by selecting the canvas, indicating it should be white

I don't like having to mess with pictures like that, but until I get a studio light or learn how to take interior photos much better, it'll have to do.

    2. Thanks! I find I take the same photo several times over, with different lighting conditions - natural light, nl with house lights, only house lights, natural with only a lamp... etc.

I do enjoy hearing peoples spin on things. So whether you like it or lump it, bring it.
